There had been a gap in the history of the X-Men for quite some time. They had abandoned the institute, many in hopes for a normal life. There had been very little mutant activity in the surrounding areas which allowed the government to speed up their research on mutants. The government soon learnt that some mutant refuge was located at the old Xavier mansion. The place was evacuated and destroyed.
The land was then bought by Emma Frost - whom appeared to be just a normal person, and having her telepathic gifts did not go unused. She rebuilt the mansion, and during construction found that the sub-basement had not been destroyed. She used Cerebro to contact all mutants to let them know there safe haven was still safe, and they could return.
Meanwhile, the disbandoned Brotherhood had also recieved this message, and slowly joined back together and started wrecking havoc on the citizens of the US. Now the X-Men have to deal with the Brotherhood, and the Goverment.
